    The BioFile: Mark Cuban
by Scoop Malinowski - Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Status:  Owner of Dallas Mavericks. Also owner and chairman of HDNet - the world's only all high-definition national television network.

DOB: July 31, 1958  In: Pittsburgh, PA

Childhood Heroes:  "My dad, Julius Erving, Willie Stargell, John Brisker."

Hobbies/Interests: "Anything technology driven, keeping up with technology, play basketball, workout, play with my daughter, hang out with my family."

Favorite Movies:  "Bubble, Enron, The Smartest Guys In The Room, One Last Thing and World's Fastest Indian."

Favorite TV Shows:  "Law & Order, Get Out, and HDNet World Report - plug [laughs]."

Musical Tastes:  "Hip-hop, I'd say classic rock, Ludacris to Jay-Z to John Mellencamp to Charlie Daniels Band [smiles]."

First Job:  "Selling garbage bags door-to-door (age 12)."

First Car:  "1966 Buick LeSabre. (Color?) Red."

Favorite Meal:  "Tuna fish sandwiches at 7-11."

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: "What's the name of that?...Raspberry sorbet."

Early Mavericks Memory: "Playing Dirk (Nowitzki) one-on-one when I first bought the team (in 2000) and going up 2-0 and being smart enough to quit [laughs]."

Pre-Game Feeling: "Calm. Depends on if it's a home game or away game. If it's a home game I'm paying attention to the arena presentation. And everything that's going on and how the fans are responding. And the game obviously. And if it's an away game, just looking at our preparation, curiosity at what the coaches have prepared. And then curiosity over which officials that we've got assigned."

Greatest Career Moment:  "In basketball, beating Utah in the 5th game my first full year."

Most Painful Moment:  "Losing to San Antonio. The most painful moment is the last game we lost [laughs]. That's it. Because they're all painful."

Funny Basketball Memory:  "With the team? Oh my goodness. Me and Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki singing onstage and playing guitar during the All-Star break [smiles]."

Childhood Dream:  "Baseball player and basketball player, yeah."

Favorite Vacation Spot:  "That's a good question. Hmm. I don't know if I have one favorite."

Toughest Competitors Encountered: "In the NBA? First I'd say the competitors in business are far fiercer than in the NBA. Because there's more at stake than any given game or season. Bill Gates. Rob Glaser. The Google guys. Those are the fiercest competitors. Put that in there and see how they respond [smiles]."

Favorite Players To Watch: "Shawn Livingston with the Clippers. (Why?) He's just fun to watch. I like to watch the young kids and how they develop, the early flashes of brilliance - see if they can develop on it. All of our guys obviously. But on other teams...guys like Dirk. Just watching Dirk is a dream and a pleasure. Dwyane Wade I like to watch. I guess Carter. Tracy McGrady. I could go on for days."

People Qualities Most Admired:  "Intensity. Compassion. Sense of humor. Focus. And just someone who cares about people."

    College: Indiana University.
